Rhino Mac – Now w/ Paneling Tools

For those of you with Macs, there is a beta version of Rhino available. The most recent release – out today – features its first plugin: Paneling Tools!

Keep in mind that although both of these are free to download and nearly fully functional, they are works-in-progress and some functions might not work as expected, but they are constantly improving it.

Unfolding Geometry

A few people had asked me about tools for unfolding geometry to cut by hand or for use on the laser cutter. Rhino offers a few good tools such as UNROLLSRF, SMASH, or FLATTENSRF, all of which are explained in detail in the help files with simple video examples.

There are also useful plugins such as Advanced Flattening that use more complex algorithms to analyze the stresses of the surfaces, and can be found on the Rhino Labs page.

A third party software that is also sometimes useful is Pepakura. It’s capable of unfolding entire geometries and displaying them in side-by-side view. It also creates tabs for ease of construction. A demo version can be downloaded from the website, but requires the purchase of a key for saving and exporting. A workaround may be to print as a .PDF and open the .PDF in Illustrator.
